Sophie travaille avec ardeur dans une boutique de chapeaux : sa vie est sans histoire. Mais un jour, alors qu'elle va voir une de ses s½urs, elle rencontre par hasard Hauru le Magicien (Howl en anglais et Howl (ハウル, Hauru?) en japonais) qui l'aide à se rendre à sa destination. Mais la Sorcière des Landes, jalouse de l'intérêt soudain d'Hauru pour la jeune fille, la transforme en une vieille femme de 90 ans.

Forcée de quitter le magasin et sa famille, Sophie part sans savoir où aller. Elle trouve finalement refuge dans le château de Hauru, où elle entre sans se faire inviter pour se protéger du vent glacial. Elle cache à son hôte sa véritable identité, mais il est clairvoyant. Calcifer le démon qui active le château, lui propose un marché : elle doit découvrir le secret qui l'unit à Hauru, ainsi celui-ci sera brisé, et il la libèrera de la malédiction de la sorcière.

Sophie reste alors dans le château comme femme de ménage, et mène peu à peu ses recherches concernant ce mystérieux pacte.
